Picture the throne room. One chair matters, and she is not sitting in it — her child is. She was queen once, through the king who has died, and she is still in the room, a step to the side, older than everyone and known to everyone. She does not give the orders, yet nothing much happens without her seeing it. That position, standing beside the seat of power because you came before it, is what the words carry, at court and afterwards outside it.
