The quayside is the strip of land right beside a quay — the hard edge by the water where ships tie up, load, and . You walk along it, stand on it, or leave goods on it; it is not the water and not the ship. People use it for the ground itself and for the little world around it: cranes, warehouses, cafés facing the boats. It is mainly a British word. In American English you are more likely to hear dock, , or wharf for the same kind of place. It is ordinary and a bit old-harbour in feel, not fancy.

An area alongside a quay.
- It was purchased by the Isle of Wight Railway in 1882, and continued to work between Brading and Bembridge until 1917, when it was taken over by the War Department, and sent overseas for war service in Mesopotamia, whence it never returned. It survived until at least 1921, when it was observed on the quayside at Basra.
