On a ship, the quarterdeck is the back part of the upper deck, toward the stern. In the old navy, officers stood there and gave orders; ordinary sailors did not lounge on it. Even now, navy people treat it as a rather formal place: you do not walk onto it casually, and on some ships you salute when you step onto it. The word is specialist sea talk. “” here is an old sea word for the back side of the ship, not a coin and not fifteen minutes, and the deck is not “a of the ship’s floor” — though that is what the spelling makes students guess.
