A quadriplegic is a person who cannot move both arms and both legs, usually after a serious injury to the spinal cord in the neck. People describe it as “from the neck down.” The word is also an adjective: “quadriplegic patients.” The same honest extra note applies: some people with this label still have a little movement in the shoulders or arms. Many people now prefer “a person with quadriplegia,” so the injury is not treated as the whole human being. You will still hear quadriplegic in hospitals and in the news; it is blunt, not a slur, but it is not a word to throw around. British doctors often say tetraplegic instead.
