1. 1

Pyrex is a company name for a strong glass that does not shatter when it gets very hot, so people use it for baking dishes, measuring , and plates that can go in the oven. In many kitchens the brand has become the everyday word: a Pyrex dish often just means that kind of heat-proof glass dish. It sounds like a home word, not a science word. Corning first made it in 1915. Though actually, not every clear oven dish is Pyrex, and older and newer Pyrex glass have not always been the same — but in ordinary talk, Pyrex still means the dish you can put in a hot oven without watching it crack.

組成From pie + r + -ex. Corning already had other product names ending in -ex. One of the first things sold under the new mark was a pie plate; they put r between pie and ex so it was easier to say, then squeezed the whole thing to Pyrex. The name also makes people think of pyro- (“fire”), which fits hot glass, but that is a hint in the sound, not how the name was built.
