From Urdu/Persian pāy-jāma, literally 'leg garment' (pāy 'leg' + jāma 'garment'), borrowed into English in the 19th century via British India.
這個字來自烏爾都語／波斯語的 pāy-jāma，字面就是「腿＋衣服」，也就是「腿上穿的東西」。十九世紀英國人在印度看到當地人穿這種繫繩寬褲，把詞帶回英語，後來又把它專門用在睡覺穿的那一套上。所以「寬鬆長褲」是原意，「睡衣」反而是後來在英語裡長出來的。
