    Pvt. is how you write the army rank private in a short way, usually before a name: Pvt. Chen. A private is the lowest rank in the army — the ordinary soldier, not an officer. You do not say 'pvt' out loud as a word; you still say private. You meet the short form in war stories, on lists, and in American films. Though actually, English also uses private for 'not public' (a private letter, a private road), and in some countries a company name may have Pvt. Ltd. for a private limited company. That is a different private. This one is only the soldier.
