If someone is pushing 40, 50, or 60, they are nearly that age — getting close to the number, not already past it. It is informal, a little , and people use it when the number feels big: He's pushing fifty, She must be pushing sixty. dictionaries often say it is for older people, and that is the typical use; you would sound odd saying a teenager is pushing 16. In real talk, pushing 30 is common too. It is not the verb pushing as in shoving a door, and it is not the same as being . You put the number right after it: pushing + age.
