Your purview is the area your job, your power, or your knowledge covers — the limits of what is yours to deal with, or what you can fairly claim to know. If something is within your purview, it is your business. If it is outside your purview, it is not your job, or you do not know enough. Lawyers and officials also use it for the reach of a law or a rule: within the purview of this Act. It is a formal, office-and-court word. Ordinary people more often say “that’s not my job” or “that’s not my area.” Though actually, English speakers sometimes treat it as a slightly softer no: “That’s outside my purview” can mean “please ask someone else,” without sounding rude. Do not use it for a view from a window; that is just a view. The word was later pulled toward view in people’s minds, but the old core is “what is provided for / what the rule covers.”
組成From Middle English purveu (“proviso”), from Anglo-Norman purveu est (“it is provided”) or purveu que (“provided that”), from Old French porveü, past participle of porveoir (“to provide”), from Latin prōvideō. Later influenced by view.
