    If something is purulent, it has in it, or it is making . A purulent wound looks wet and yellow-white, and it may smell. Doctors also say purulent sputum or a purulent discharge for the thick stuff that comes out of the chest or a wound. This is a hospital adjective. At home, people just say “full of ” or “it’s infected.” You put it before a noun: a purulent sore, purulent fluid. Though actually, it sits on the page near “pure,” and students sometimes hear them as cousins. They are not. Pure is “clean, not mixed.” Purulent is almost the opposite picture: messy, infected, full of that yellow liquid. You will not hear this word in kind everyday talk about a small cut; it belongs to clinics, reports, and serious infection.
