Something purposeless has no clear aim. A purposeless walk is just wandering. A purposeless meeting goes on, but nobody knows why you are there. Used about a life or a day, it can sound sad and a little heavy — writers reach for it when they feel nothing is pointing anywhere. It is more at home on the page than in chat. In speech people often say pointless or there's no point instead. Though actually, those are not the same. Pointless often means 'it will not work' or 'it is a waste'. Purposeless is quieter: there is simply no aim. A game can be pointless (you cannot win) without being purposeless (you still sat down to play).

組成purpose (an aim) + -less (without). From purpose + -less.

purposelessadj

Without purpose.
- Turbulence was everywhere, within every blade of grass, every drop of dew on a leaf, every cloud in the sky, and every star beyond. The turbulence was purposeless, but in huge quantities of purposeless turbulence, purpose took shape.
