A purist is someone who believes a thing should be done in the correct or traditional way — especially in art, sport, music, and language. A language purist may dislike mixed words or a meaning that has shifted. A jazz purist may want the old style only. The word can be calm and descriptive, but it often carries a small smile: this person is , a bit too in love with the “real” way. Though actually, almost every field has purists, and they are not always wrong; they are the people who notice when a shortcut changes the thing itself. A purist is not a Puritan. One cares about the craft being done “properly.” The other name belongs to a strict religious history.
