    A pull-up is a fitness exercise: you hang from a bar above your head and use your arms — and your back — to pull your body up until your chin is near the bar, then you lower yourself again. Trainers count them: “ten pull-ups.” A pull-up bar is the bar you use. Though actually, people mix this up with a chin-up. Strictly, a chin-up has your palms facing you; a pull-up has the palms facing away. Lots of speakers treat the two as the same, so do not be surprised. As a noun for the exercise, it is usually written with a . The verb pull up is a different meaning in everyday talk: a car pulling up is a car coming to a stop. Same pieces, different job.

    An exercise done for strengthening the arms and back in which one lifts one's own weight while hanging from a bar. Palms may be facing in any direction.
