In British informal speech, pud is short for pudding. And though actually, pudding in Britain often means the sweet dish at the end of a meal — dessert in general — not only the soft, milky thing sold as pudding in American English, and not only what Taiwan calls 布丁. What's for pud? is a , family question. Christmas pud is the heavy dark fruit pudding eaten at Christmas. Americans almost never say pud this way, and you would not write it in a formal essay. (The spelling pud has other, ruder or dialect uses in English; this entry is the pudding one.)
