Puberty is the stretch of years when a child’s body changes into an adult’s body, and the person becomes able to have children. It is not one morning. Hair grows in new places. A voice may get lower. Girls start their periods. Bodies shoot up, often , and feelings can swing hard because of the body’s chemical messengers. Doctors, parents, and health class use this word; it is calm and slightly medical, not rude. Though actually, puberty is about the body, not the school year. Someone can be twelve and already in it, or sixteen and still waiting — both are normal, and it is not a race. After puberty you are physically an adult; you may still be a teenager in every other way. Friends might not say the word at all. They name the bits: spots, a deeper voice, “when I was changing.”
