A psychotropic drug is one that acts on your mind — mood, thinking, sleep, seeing, or feeling. Doctors use the word for medicines (for sadness, worry, , and some kinds of pain or sleep trouble) and also, in legal talk, for some illegal drugs that change the mind. You will mostly meet it in medical, pharmacy, or customs English, often in front of drugs or medication. It can also be a noun for such a drug. It does not mean the person taking it is , and it does not mean the drug is ‘crazy’ or always dangerous. A pill for depression is psychotropic; so is some street drugs. The shared idea is only this: it turns the mind, for better or worse.
