This word belongs to a kind of talking treatment. You sit with a trained person, often for a long time, and talk about your life, your feelings, your dreams, and the parts of the past that still hurt. The aim is to find hidden causes — wishes and fears you may not see yourself. The name of that treatment is psychoanalysis; psychoanalytic is the word we put in front of the people, ideas, and methods that belong to it (a psychoanalytic session, a psychoanalytic therapist). It started with Sigmund Freud, though actually many later doctors kept the talking and dropped a lot of his more rigid ideas. It is a formal, specialist word. Everyday people more often say therapy. It is not the same as psychological, which is the wide everyday word for anything to do with the mind.
組成From psycho- + analytic. psycho- comes from Ancient Greek ψῡχή (psūkhḗ), the mind or soul; analytic is about taking something apart to understand it.
