Psychiatric means about mental illness and the doctors who treat it. A psychiatric hospital, or a psychiatric ward, is a place in a hospital for people whose minds are very — not a broken bone, but trouble in thinking, feeling, or behaviour that medicine takes seriously. Psychiatric treatment is that kind of care; a psychiatric drug is a medicine meant for it. Doctors and nurses use this word in a careful, formal way. Though actually, in everyday talk some people throw it at anyone who acts oddly — “That’s psychiatric!” — and that is usually unfair. It is an adjective: it describes care, illness, hospitals, and training. You do not say “He is a psychiatric.” That would be mixing it up with psychiatrist, the person.
