A pseud is a person who pretends to know a lot about something and talks about it in a way so that other people will admire them. It is not a compliment. The word is mainly British, informal, and a little old-fashioned now, though you still meet it in newspapers and jokes about art, wine, or theory. In the US you are more likely to hear phony or poser. It probably comes from cutting down pseudointellectual, from Greek pseudēs, false. As a noun it names the person — not just the idea "fake".
