Psephology is the study of how people vote in elections: who voted, where, and what the numbers mean. The name was coined in 1948 by Frank Hardie. It draws on Greek psêphos, a — because in ancient Greece people used to count and to cast a vote. So the in the word is not a folk story; it is the old voting token. It is still a specialist word. Most people just say the study of elections, , or electoral research. You meet it in political science, in newspapers on election night, and almost nowhere else.
