Proximity means nearness — in distance or in time. A hotel’s proximity to the station means it is near the station. The proximity of an exam means the exam is coming soon. It is a formal, slightly heavy word; in speech we usually say near or close to. Though actually, English speakers love the phrase “close proximity,” which says “close” twice. You will hear it everywhere, even if a careful teacher would rather you just said “close to.” The word is about how near things are, not about guessing a number.
