A prowler is a person who moves quietly around, often at night, near homes — following, hiding, looking for a way in, or trying to , harm, or steal. News reports use it for someone seen lurking in a garden or street after dark. It carries a threat: this person should not be there. It comes from prowl, to walk slowly and quietly, like an animal hunting. Not every night walker is a prowler. A neighbour walking the dog is not one; someone slipping between houses is.
