A providential event is one that comes at just the right time, as if it were arranged to help you. ’ dictionaries often call it lucky, and that is how people use it: a providential meeting, a providential escape. Though actually, the older feeling is stronger than a lottery win. It sounds as if Providence — God, or some kind care — in. So it is luck with a hint of meaning, not only chance. It is a formal, slightly churchy or word. In everyday talk, people just say lucky or it was meant to be. You would not use it for a small nice surprise, like finding a coin. You use it when the timing feels almost too good, and someone wants a word with weight.
