    Proto- is usually added to the front of another word to mean 'first', 'earliest', or 'original form of'. Scientists use it for early forms of things - a 'protostar' is a very young, forming star, before it fully becomes a star. On its own, without anything attached, people also just say 'proto' as a short, informal way of saying 'prototype' - the first working version of a new invention, before the real product is made.
