If something is prototypical, it is a very clear, classic example of its kind — the sort of thing you would point to first if you had to show someone what that type is like. A prototypical quiet student who still gets top marks; a prototypical superhero in a cape. It is a little more formal than typical, and a little stronger: not just usual, but the model case. It comes from prototype, the first or original model of something. Though actually, in everyday English you can often just say typical or classic and be understood; prototypical shows up more in essays, reviews, and careful writing.
