Prosody is the name for the patterns of sound and rhythm in poetry and in spoken language, and for the study of those patterns. Two neighbouring rooms share the word. In poetry, prosody is the craft of beats and line-length: how a sonnet is built, where the stress falls, whether lines rhyme. In speech, it is the rise and fall of the voice, the timing, the stress — everything that makes talking sound alive rather than like a machine reading one word at a time. Though actually the two rooms are close: a poem's metre is a careful, written kind of the same music we already use when we speak. It is a technical word. Students of literature and of use it; daily conversation almost never needs it. It is not the same as prose (ordinary writing), even though the two words look a little alike at the start.
