In Roman mythology, Proserpina is the Latin name for the goddess the Greeks called Persephone. She is the daughter of Ceres, who looks after grain and growing food. , king of the dead, takes her down to the underworld. Her mother is so sad that nothing on earth will grow, until a deal is made: Proserpina spends part of each year below the ground and part of the year above. When she comes back, spring comes. That is the old picture of the seasons. You will meet the name in Roman poetry, in paintings, and in older English books, sometimes spelled Proserpine. It is a proper name, so it takes a capital letter. It is not a job and not a kind of writing — only this goddess, or a work named after her. Though actually, Roman and Greek tellings are the same family of story with different names: Ceres is Demeter, is Hades, Proserpina is Persephone.
