In Greek stories, Persephone is a goddess, the daughter of Zeus and of Demeter, who watches over grain and growing things. Hades — the Romans called him — took her down to the Underworld, the land under the ground where the spirits of the dead live, and made her queen there. Zeus allowed her to return, but only for about six months each year, from the beginning of spring to the end of summer. The rest of the year she stays below, and the earth above grows cold and bare; that is how the old stories explain winter turning into spring. So she stands for death and coming back to life, and for the year turning. Though actually, tellings disagree on small points — whether she ate seeds, how willing she was — but the going-down and the coming-back is the heart of it. You will meet her in myths, in art, and in poems about the seasons.
組成From Ancient Greek Περσεφόνη (Persephónē). What the name first meant is not clear; even long ago, people did not agree, so it is safest to keep it as a name.
