1. 1

A proprietress is a woman who owns a business — the old gendered pair of proprietor. You meet it on old hotel signs, in novels, in stories about a boarding house or a little shop. Though actually, most people now just say proprietor for a woman as well. Using -ess makes the gender the point, and many women who own shops do not want that extra label. It is not wrong; it is dated. If you use it today, you are choosing an older voice, not a more correct one. The same thing happened to actress for some speakers, but proprietress has further: in a modern news story, a woman who owns a café is almost always the proprietor, or simply the owner.

    女店主、女老闆(偏舊;現在多半直接說老闆)
