Proprietorial describes the feeling or the behaviour of someone who acts as if a thing — or a person — belongs to them. A proprietorial hand on the back of a chair. A proprietorial look around an office. It is about the attitude of owning, not the legal fact of owning. Though actually, this word often carries a slight frown. If someone is proprietorial toward a partner, they are treating that person like property, and we usually do not like that. It is not a compliment. Do not mix it with proprietary, which is a different coat: proprietary means owned as a product, like a proprietary brand or proprietary software. Proprietorial is the human, slightly pushy “mine” feeling. You can use it of a place you love, more softly — a gardener can be proprietorial about a plot they only rent — but even then it means “as if it were mine.”
