In a play, the prompter is the person who gives actors their next words when they forget. They sit out of sight — in a small hood at the front of the stage, or just off to the side — and offer a quiet cue, not a loud performance of the line. The verb is to prompt. Though actually, you will meet prompt in other rooms: a computer prompt asks you to type; a teleprompter is a glass screen that shows a speaker the words on camera. This word, with -er, is the theatre job: a human being helping the actors.
