A promontory is a long, narrow piece of land that sticks out into the sea. Picture a nose of rock: water on more than one side, often high and steep, with a wide view. Walkers, sailors, and geography books use the word. It is not just any shore, and it is not a soft beach that gently curves. Though actually, people are not always strict — a big may get the name too — but the picture in your head should be land reaching out, sea around it. A whole huge peninsula is a bigger idea; a promontory is that jutting piece.
