A promo is a short film made to advertise something — a concert, a product, a TV show, a festival. It is the everyday short form of promotion, and people in media and marketing say it all the time. You might sit through a thirty-second promo before a programme, or watch a band’s promo video. It is informal: a poster may still say advertisement or trailer, but in the office they will say “the promo.” Though actually, English speakers stretch it. A promo code is a discount code, not a film at all; shops borrowed the short word and walked off with it. The sense here is the short advertising film.
