    The proconsulate is the rank of a proconsul, or the stretch of time when someone held that job — not the person himself. You might read “during his proconsulate in Asia,” meaning in the years he was the Roman governor there. It is a historian’s word; you will almost never hear it in the street. It names the office or the term. The man who holds it is a proconsul.
