The proceeds are the money that comes in from doing something or selling something — a concert, a bake sale, a house, an auction. We almost always say it in the plural: “the proceeds,” never “a proceed.” It is a little formal. On a charity poster or in the news you will see “All proceeds go to….” In a shop, people just say “the money” or “what we made.” Though actually, it does not strictly mean profit after costs, even if people stretch it that way; it is the money that comes forth from that event or sale. Lawyers and charities use it a lot; everyday chat uses it less.
