Two main uses. In law, it's a punishment where, instead of going to prison, a person must follow certain rules and report to an officer for a set time — if they break the rules, they may be sent to prison. At work, 'probation' is a trial period at the start of a new job, when the company checks whether you're a good fit before making the job permanent.
