    Primogeniture is a rule of inheritance: when a man dies, his land and property go to his oldest son, not shared equally among the children, and usually not to daughters. It is a system, a law-custom, not just “being born first.” For centuries it kept big estates in one pair of hands in Europe, so the farm or title would not be split into smaller and smaller pieces. Though actually, the tidy picture (“always the oldest son”) hid many local twists: some places used male-preference, some let a daughter inherit if there was no son, and many families found ways around it. Today most countries have dropped it for ordinary property, but you will still meet the word in history, royal succession, and legal talk. It is a hard, technical noun; nobody uses it to mean “my older .”
