A primate is an animal in the group that includes humans, apes, monkeys, and a few smaller cousins such as . Scientists put us in this group because of shared body features: eyes that face forward, hands that can grasp, and a relatively large brain. So a primate is not “a monkey” only — you are a primate too, though actually everyday talk says the primates and often pictures monkeys first. The animal sense is from the late 1800s, from a belief that this group was the “first-rank” or highest order of animals. It is a scientific word; in ordinary speech you say monkey, ape, or human. The same spelling also names a senior bishop in some churches — an older use, from the 1200s, of the same Latin “first, chief.” This entry is the animal.
組成Animal sense first attested in 1876, from French primate, from Latin primas, primatis (“one of the first, a chief”), named because people believed this group was the highest order of animals. An older English primate (from about 1275) is a chief bishop — same Latin word, different job.
