- 1
Premarital means happening or existing before a person gets married. It is a quiet, slightly formal word. You meet it in news, law, church, and health talk, not so much in chat with friends. The most common pairing is premarital sex — sex before marriage — and also premarital or a premarital agreement (a paper about money, signed before the wedding). It can describe a time, a habit, or a feeling: a premarital home, premarital nerves. It does not mean “too early” in general, and it does not mean “about to have a baby.” It only points at the stretch of life before marriage.
