Predestination is a belief, strongest in some Christian teaching, that God has already decided everything that will happen — including, in the strict versions, who is saved — and that people cannot change that plan. It is a church and theology word more than a dinner-table word. Though actually, everyday talk reaches for cousins in feeling: “it was meant to be,” “fate,” “天注定.” Those can sound close, but they are looser. Predestination names a specific idea about God already choosing, and churches have fought over it for centuries: some hold it tightly, others push back and talk about free will. Do not let the look of destination fool you. Destination is the place you are going; this word is about a life (or a cosmos) already set.
組成From Middle English predestinacion, from Old French, from Late Latin praedestinatio. On the surface: predestine + -ation. It replaced an old English word, foreteohhung.
