Predation is what happens when one animal kills and eats another. The hunter is the predator; the hunted animal is the prey. Lions on , cats on mice, sharks on fish — use predation for that whole eating relationship, not for one dramatic scene only. Though actually, writers stretch it: a company “preying on” smaller ones, or crime that “preys on” fear. That is metaphor. The home meaning is animals. It is not a kitchen-table word. You meet it in science class, nature films, and serious news. And though the letters look like pre- plus date, this word does not mean “earlier in time.” It comes from an old Latin word for plunder and spoils.
