    Pre-war means before a war, and in a lot of English it quietly means before the Second World War, unless someone names another war. A pre-war building went up before that war. Pre-war furniture, pre-war photos, pre-war streets — things from that earlier time. In Britain you also hear it for houses from the 1920s and 1930s. Though actually, if people are talking about a different war, pre-war moves with them: in a story about another country, it can mean before that war. The word itself only says before the war; place and history fill in which one. After the war is post-war.
