Post-war means after a war — the time, the people, the buildings, the feeling. A post-war town is one rebuilt when the fighting has stopped. The post-war years are the years that come next. Though actually, if an English speaker just says post-war and does not name a war, they nearly always mean after the Second World War. If they mean a different war, they usually say so: post-Civil War, post-Vietnam. You will see it with a (post-war) or as one word (postwar); both are used. It is a calm, ordinary word in history and news, not slang and not very stiff either. Do not mix this post- with the post that means mail. Here post- only means after.
