    Pre-tax talks about money before the government takes tax. A company's pre-tax profit is how much it made, looking only at the business, before tax is taken away. You will also hear pre-tax loss, pre-tax income, and pre-tax earnings — all the same idea: the number still includes the slice that tax will eat. News and company reports love this word because it lets them show a bigger figure. Your own pay can be pre-tax too: the amount written before tax comes out. After tax is after-tax. Though actually, a bigger pre-tax profit is not extra cash in the pocket; tax still has to be paid.
