    If something is pre-set, someone already chose it before you got there. A pre-set time is a time fixed earlier. A machine can have pre-set buttons: press one, and it jumps to a station or a number that was saved before. You also see it for prices, limits, and rules — the figure was decided in advance, not made up in the moment. It can describe a thing (a pre-set alarm) or name the action (they pre-set the heat). Though actually, people often write it as one word, preset, with the same meaning.
