If something is pre-set, someone already chose it before you got there. A pre-set time is a time fixed earlier. A machine can have pre-set buttons: press one, and it jumps to a station or a number that was saved before. You also see it for prices, limits, and rules — the figure was decided in advance, not made up in the moment. It can describe a thing (a pre-set alarm) or name the action (they pre-set the heat). Though actually, people often write it as one word, preset, with the same meaning.
pre-set 表示在你來之前就已經先設定好了，例如 「a pre-set alarm」 是事先設定的鬧鐘。機器上的 「pre-set buttons」，按下去就會跳到之前存好的電台或號碼。價格、上限和規則也可以這樣說，指它是事先決定的，不是當下臨時想出來的。
它可以用來形容東西，也可以當動作，例如 「they pre-set the heat」，指先把暖氣設定好。很多人寫成一個字 preset，意思相同。
