A pragmatist is someone who deals with problems in a sensible, practical way instead of following a set of ideas. The word names the person, not the method: the method is pragmatism; the person who lives by it is a pragmatist. You also hear it as a describing word, a pragmatist approach, meaning the same cool-headed, “what will work?” style. In and business it can sound like praise (this person gets results) or like a small sting (this person has no big beliefs). In philosophy, a pragmatist is someone who follows that school of thought. Though actually, in ordinary English the “person who is practical about problems” sense is the one you will meet first, and it is far more common than the textbook sense.
