Posthumous means it happens after someone has died. A posthumous book is printed after the writer is gone. A posthumous award is given when the person cannot stand up to take it. A posthumous child is a baby born after the father's death. It is a formal, careful word — news, history, prizes — not everyday chat. Say it POS-chuh-mus; the h is not a hard separate sound. Though actually, the extra h in the spelling is an old mix-up. The Latin word was postumus, the last, from posterus, coming after. People later wrote posthumus because they thought of humus, the ground, and burial. The h is in the spelling because of that story, not because the word truly comes from earth.
