Portsmouth is a city and port on the south coast of England, in Hampshire. For hundreds of years it has been one of Britain’s main navy towns: were built and repaired there, and you can still visit famous old ships in the . Ferries also leave from Portsmouth, taking cars and people across to France and to the nearby Isle of Wight. Local people and football fans often call it , a nickname that will puzzle visitors. The name comes from Middle English Portesmuða, from Old English Portesmuða: muða was the old word for the mouth of a river or harbour. There is another Portsmouth in the United States; this entry is the English one. People say PORTS-muth — the middle s is sounded, and -mouth is weak, as in Plymouth.
