Portage is when people take a small boat out of the water and carry it over land — from one river or lake to another, or around a waterfall they cannot through. You meet it in and in old travel stories, especially from places like Canada, where lakes do not always join up. It is also a verb: you portage the canoe. City English almost never needs it; it is an outdoor, slightly technical word. Though actually, it can also mean the path itself (“the portage was two ”), and in older use it could mean a fee for carrying goods. For a , the boat-carrying sense is the one that matters. It is not slang, and it is not the same as a harbour.
組成port “to carry” + -age “the act of doing it,” from French, from Latin for a carrying charge.
