Popish is an offensive adjective meaning related to the Roman Catholic Church — said with dislike. Do not use this word. It belongs with : older Protestant English, especially in Britain, used it to paint Catholic things as foreign and wrong — a popish plot, popish practices, popish priests. The ending -ish often feels small or gentle in words like smallish; here it is not cute. It is a slap. If you meet it in an old book or a play, it tells you the speaker is hostile. The ordinary are Catholic and Roman Catholic.
